Summer is in full swing down in South Georgia, a place nicknamed the 'Serengeti of Southern waters', and it's a real explosion of life. King penguin chicks are growing at an incredible rate in those super busy rookeries, while elephant seals are setting up house with their harems in a major display of breeding mode, and albatross chicks are getting ready to take flight in the endless daylight.
As summer warms up in Antarctica, the landscape is softening, with snow melting in the sheltered coves. It's a great time for penguin colonies in Antarctica, with gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguins raising their active chicks with ease. Seals are out and about on the ice floes and sun-kissed beaches, while humpbacks, minkes, and orcas are really putting on a show, feeding like crazy in the rich waters.
The remote, breathtaking town of Puerto Natales gives you a deep connection to Patagonia through its rugged natural environment. Your personal concierge team will be waiting for you at the airport, ready to whisk you away to your plush hotel in style.
Your journey begins with a meeting in Puerto Natales, where you will join other travelers for a 2.5-hour charter flight over the Drake Passage to reach King George Island, which serves as your initial Antarctic destination. The plane landing will lead you directly to a Zodiac boat, which starts your Antarctic journey through the icy heart of Antarctica.
Depending on the weather, we may start by navigating around Elephant Island, a desolate refuge where Shackleton's men suffered through months of unrelenting isolation, or the starkly barren South Orkney Islands.
Then, the Antarctic Peninsula awaits. As you cruise through Gerlache Strait, Neumayer, and Lemaire, you'll be absolutely floored by Antarctica's stunning assortment of blue ice. The beaches are teeming with massive gentoo, chinstrap, and Adélie penguin colonies that go on and on and on.
As we cruise in Zodiacs past these massive, dazzling icebergs of an intense, deep blue hue, we keep a sharp eye out for humpback whales as they bubble-net for krill in the nutrient-rich waters. The flexibility of our navigation and the benefits of our compact ship will allow us to explore less-traveled areas, like the Antarctic's vast, icy Antarctic Sound or the icy Weddell Sea, provided the weather cooperates.
We embark on an epic journey across the unforgiving Scotia Sea, echoing the trailblazing route of Shackleton's legendary journey. Aboard, dive into an immersive program of riveting lectures on polar heritage, fascinating wildlife, and groundbreaking science, or brush up on your skills in photography masterclasses. Out on the observation deck, keep your eyes peeled for an array of seabirds, seals, and your very first glimpse of South Georgia's majestic peaks.
We're on our way to South Georgia and will likely cruise by the remote Shags, a haven for seabirds.
Weather permitting, you'll get to experience an evening Zodiac adventure, an electrifying introduction to the subantarctic.
Over four days, we'll thoroughly investigate South Georgia, from north to south, and aim to visit wildlife wonderlands like St Andrews, Salisbury Plain, Gold Harbour, and Cooper Bay. Expect to walk through massive king penguin colonies, observe elephant seals basking on golden beaches, and pay respects at Grytviken, the last resting place of Sir Ernest Shackleton.
We'll have the chance to join a Zodiac excursion amidst the breathtaking glaciers of Drygalski Fjord and observe a massive flock of albatrosses taking to the waters from their nests on Prion Island.
Alongside witnessing magnificent albatrosses soar majestically above the swelly waters and dolphins playfully frolicking in our wake, you'll be treated to an exciting array of engaging lectures, instructional workshops, and up-close, personal stories from our seasoned expedition team. Immersive photography sessions will equip you with the skills to capture breathtaking polar landscapes, while time spent on deck provides ample opportunities to form a deeper connection with the untamed wilderness.
But don't get too comfy, our wild adventure comes to an end in Port Stanley, where you'll bid farewell to the good ship. Take a last chance to let loose in the vibrant capital and grab some awesome souvenirs at the local shops before heading to the airport to catch your next ride!
