13 Day Colombia Itinerary

Day 1: Welcome to the Coffee Region

Day 2: Coffee Region: Pijao

AM - Coffee Region - Exploring Pijao

Pijao, a tiny town located in the Andes mountains range is an interesting place. It's the tales of its residents that give this place a special touch. A local guide takes you on a Pijao tour to meet Don Leo, who is a coffee farmer from the region. He will show you around his farm and tell you about his history. Pijao's houses are an important part of your tour. They hide beautiful gardens with hydrangeas. Anthuriums. Roses. And Saint Joachim. Enjoy a warm drink and a chat in a local home while enjoying the aromas of the plants growing there. You will discover that coffee is central to the lives of people living in Colombia's pijao region.

You can enjoy the Pijao plantations after sharing this wonderful experience with the people.

Day 3: Welcome to Medellin

AM - Coffee Region - Pereira - Departure transport arranged

You will be picked up by a driver who speaks Spanish at your hotel to make the 2 hour transfer from your hotel to the airport. Thank you for visiting us.

Please collect your baggage and proceed to the arrivals hall when you arrive at the airport. You will find your guide outside holding a sign bearing your name. You will reach your hotel after a transfer of 45 minutes (under normal traffic).

Medellín - You can do the walking tour through El Poblado and Tejo.

We invite you today to spend 3 hours walking through "El Poblado", the neighborhood of the city with your guide. El Poblado, the modernest neighborhood of the city, reflects the rapid growth that has occurred in the last few years.

You will end your tour by heading to the "tejo field". It is an ancient pre-Hispanic sport that involves hitting metal rings, called "bocin", with a "tejo", from a distance of 22mts. The game is made more thrilling by the inclusion of gunpowder in small triangular packets, called "mechas".

Day 4: Medellin

AM - Medellin - Visit of Medellin (8h) + graffiti expert in comuna 13

Explore Medellin for 8 hours including a visit with a graffiti expert in Comuna 13.

Medellin, the city of eternal spring is today the most innovative Latin American city. In the recent past, it was closely linked to Pablo Escobar's life and violent gang wars.

Medellin has undergone some dramatic changes in the past twenty years. A new development program has transformed Medellin, the city with the highest crime rate in the world, into an urban example of modern transformation.

You will visit the Botero Square today to see an exhibit of sculptures by Colombian Fernando Botero. His works have become a symbol of Medellin. Afternoon, you can take the Metro Cable to comuna 13 which was once notorious for gang-related violence. Cable cars were built to connect people living in the suburbs of Medellin with Metro Medellin. The unique Electric Escalators give visitors an insight into the daily lives of people living in this district. Graffittis tells the stories of the inhabitants.

Day 5: Piedra del Peñol / Guatapé

AM - Medellin - Classic Guatapé and Peñol Tour with lunch included.

Come on our hiking tour and spend the day in a green, lush environment away from Medellin. Ascend 649 stairs to the top of La Piedra de Guatape for a breathtaking view from 200m. Above the Penol-Guatape Dam, and Guatape Lake. You can enjoy the views while you eat and drink a cool beverage at the little food stands on the top of the rock. Learn about the two cities that claimed La Piedra and the history of this area. As you walk down the cobblestone streets of Guatape, discover its picturesque town with colorful houses and impressive architecture. Enjoy a traditional lunch at a restaurant selected by your guide.

Day 6: Welcome to Barichara

AM - Medellin - Departure transfer to Enrique Olaya Herrera Airport (EOH) with a Spanish-speaking driver (no guide).

Your driver will pick you up at your hotel for your 15 minutes transfer to the airport (under normal traffic conditions), on time to check in for your domestic flight.

Departure  from Medellin and arriving in San Gil.

PM - Santander - Transfer from San Gil to Barichara with meet & greet service.

You will be picked up by your guide and will then have a transfer of 40 minutes.

Day 7: Barichara / Santander

AM - Santander - Hiking excursion to Guane with lunch included.

A walk along the old route of commerce used by indigenous people is the perfect way to start the day. This road was used by the indigenous people to transport agricultural products to and from the Magdalena River. It connects 5 municipalities. The road was rebuilt in the 1950s by a German Engineer and has remained an important transportation network and trading route for tobacco, corn, cotton and quinoa. This tour provides incredible views of landscapes in the area. For nature enthusiasts, there are many native bird species and plants. 

You will be served lunch at a farm on the return trip.

Day 8: Barichara / Santander

AM - Santander - Trek to Juan Curí, including rappelling and rafting.

Juan Curi, a small town in the mountains of Ecuador is famous for its waterfalls. It is a high-level activity that will give you a rush of adrenaline. This makes it perfect for those looking to overcome their fears or adventurers. It is an arduous hike to reach the top. When you reach the summit, the most thrilling part is to descend 70 metres (230 feet) of the waterfall with ropes, specialized gear and other equipment. A team of experts and professionals will assist you throughout the entire process. Are you up for an adrenaline-filled ride? It's not necessary to be an experienced rafter. This adventure will have you navigating the Fonce River for two hours on a boat. This river has currents between level 2 and 3. It will provide a thrilling ride with some calm and others with a little turbulence. The river will have medium waves, and there are some rapids that you can feel. Take extra clothes for the return trip, including t-shirts with sleeves that cover you completely and shoes that are comfortable. Don't forget to bring sunscreen.

Day 9: Welcome to Tayrona

AM - Santander - Departure transfer from Santander.

You will be picked up by your driver who speaks Spanish at your hotel to make the 4 hour transfer from your hotel to the airport. Thank you for visiting us.

Departure from Bucaramanga and arriving in Bogota / departure from Bogota and arriving in Santa Marta.

Day 10: Don Diego River

AM - Santa Marta - Visit to the Katanzama Native Community, followed by a 1-hour hike and tubing on the Don Diego River.

In Colombia, the "Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta", is one of few places where there are indigenous peoples still present. Katanzama, one of these communities is located in Santa Marta. We hike to the community after a short journey. We learn about the Arhuacos' customs and cooking, and visit their houses. You will be able to ask any questions you want during this period. Remember that at first they will seem shy, and your objective is to help them break the ice so you can build mutual trust. The visit continues with a picnic and a sea view, where we will learn how to weave traditional bags. 

You can also ask for voluntary donations, such as school supplies, toiletries or work tools like shovels, machetes, axes and ax. 

You will then tubbing at Rio Don Diego. The journey from your starting point to the beach takes approximately 90 minutes. You will then return to the hotel by boat, finding your car and heading back.

Day 11: Welcome to Cartagena

AM - Santa Marta - Transfer without accompanying guide.

Day 12: Cartagena

AM - Cartagena - Behind the doors of Getsemaní (3h)

Getsemani is one of the most trendy neighborhoods in the city. Cartagena was the birthplace of the Independence Revolution, which turned it into Gran Colombia's first city free. This tour lasts 3 hours. The guide will tell you how this area became "one of the coolest neighbourhoods in the world". 

This tour will give you the chance to meet the locals. Luis will give you an introduction to the culture of this community and show you around his home. Discover the different Cartageneros who live in Getsemani. You will be amazed by their work in their home.

PM - Cartagena - Classic Walking Tour of the Walled City followed by sunset drinks at Café del Mar (3 hours)

The tour allows you to explore the historic centre of Cartagena within the walled city, which was declared Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 1984. We will show you colorful streets and colonial architecture in the historic walled city. The most popular attractions will be seen, including the Clock Tower, Parque de Bolivar and Plaza de San Pedro Claver. You'll also see the Santo Domingo, San Diego, Plaza Fernandez Madrid as well as other important places. Your guide will explain the history of Cartagena and share legends, pirates, and other interesting information. After the tour, relax with a cocktail at the Cafe del Mar Restaurant and watch the sun set.

This is a restaurant bar on the Bastion Santo Domingo, with an amazing view of the Caribbean. There's also live music. 

The tour will last approximately three hours. Your guide will pay close attention to all your questions, concerns, and interests to ensure that you have a pleasant time.

Day 13: Cartagena

PM - Cartagena - Transfer from Cartagena Airport to the port with a Spanish-speaking driver (approximately 15 minutes).

Cartagena de Indias welcomes you!

Please clear the immigration, pick up your bags, remove costumes, and leave the arrivals hall. You will find your Spanish-speaking driver outside holding a sign that includes your name. You will reach the port after a 15 minute transfer (with normal traffic).
