Discover Peru’s remarkable contrasts on a dynamic overland expedition from the Pacific shoreline to the Andean highlands. Travel across sweeping desert terrain, protected coastal reserves, high mountain plateaus, and ancient Inca sites while experiencing the country’s extraordinary diversity of landscapes and cultures. This adventurous route combines off-road exploration with cultural heritage, beginning in Lima and continuing through Paracas, Nazca, and the Andean highlands before reaching the Sacred Valley and the legendary citadel of Machu Picchu, concluding in the historic city of Cusco.

8 Day Peru Itinerary

Day 1: Lima (154 masl) – Arrival in the City of Kings

Arrive in Peru’s capital at 154 meters above sea level and transfer from Jorge Chavez International Airport to your hotel. Later, attend a briefing outlining the upcoming 4×4 journey, including vehicle orientation, route logistics, and safety recommendations. The remainder of the day is free to rest or independently explore Lima’s coastal districts and celebrated gastronomy. Overnight in Lima.

Day 2: Lima – Paracas – Nazca (588 masl) – Marine Wildlife & Desert Vistas

Depart early along the Pan-American Highway toward Paracas. Board a shared boat excursion to the Ballestas Islands, where Humboldt penguins, sea lions, and seabirds thrive. Continue through the Paracas National Reserve, where dramatic desert cliffs meet the Pacific. En route south, stop at the Huacachina Oasis near Ica, a palm-fringed lagoon encircled by towering dunes. Arrive in Nazca (588 masl) for the evening. Lunch box suggested (not included).

Day 3: Nazca – Chalhuanca (2,888 masl) – Ascent into the Andes

After breakfast, begin the climb from the coastal desert into the Andean mountains. Visit the Pampas Galeras National Reserve, an important sanctuary protecting wild vicuñas. Continue through highland scenery toward Yauriviru Lagoon (approx. 4,400 masl), surrounded by rugged peaks and crisp mountain air. Arrive in Chalhuanca (2,888 masl) for dinner and overnight. Lunch box suggested (not included).

Day 4: Chalhuanca – Sacred Valley (2,800 masl) – Along the Inca Route

Travel north toward Cusco, stopping at the archaeological site of Tarawasi, known for its finely crafted Inca masonry. Continue to Saywite, famed for its carved ceremonial monolith depicting intricate topographical designs. These landmarks reveal the ingenuity and spiritual depth of the Inca civilization. Descend into the Sacred Valley, arriving in Urubamba (2,800 masl) for overnight. Lunch box suggested (not included).

Day 5: Sacred Valley (2,800 masl) – Markets & Ancient Innovation

Explore the cultural richness of the Sacred Valley. Visit Pisac’s colorful market and hilltop ruins overlooking the valley. Continue to Moray, with its circular agricultural terraces believed to have functioned as an Inca experimentation center. Later, discover the salt pans of Maras, cascading down the hillside in geometric formations used since pre-Inca times. Return to Urubamba in the afternoon.

Day 6: Sacred Valley – Machu Picchu – Cusco (3,395 masl)

Transfer to Ollantaytambo station and board a panoramic train toward Aguas Calientes, following the Urubamba River through cloud forest scenery. Ascend by shuttle to Machu Picchu for a guided tour of its temples, terraces, and ceremonial spaces. After the visit, return by train and continue by road to Cusco (3,395 masl). Overnight in Cusco.

Day 7: Cusco (3,395 masl) – Leisure in the Imperial Capital

Enjoy a free day in Cusco, once the heart of the Inca Empire. Wander through colonial streets built upon Inca foundations, explore Plaza de Armas, or visit nearby archaeological sites such as Sacsayhuamán or Qorikancha at your own pace. This day allows time for acclimatization while immersing yourself in the city’s Andean-Spanish heritage. Overnight in Cusco.

Day 8: Cusco – Lima – Departure

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Lima and connect with your international departure. Reflect on a journey spanning coastal ecosystems, desert expanses, high-altitude plateaus, and the extraordinary legacy of the Incas.

Weather Preparedness

Peru’s climate varies along this route. Coastal regions such as Lima and Paracas are typically mild and dry, while desert areas can be warm by day and cool after sunset. In the Andes, temperatures fluctuate significantly, with cold mornings and evenings at higher altitudes. Layered clothing is recommended. During the rainy season from November to March, waterproof outerwear is advisable in mountain areas.
