This itinerary is designed for active travelers in good general health. It involves walking on uneven terrain at altitudes reaching 3,400 meters (11,150 feet) in Cusco. The program is designed for progressive acclimatization. The ability to walk for several hours at a leisurely pace and to climb up and down stairs and excursion boats with assistance is required.
Amazon (Iquitos Region): The climate is hot and humid. In the high-water season (December-May), the vegetation is gorgeous, and cut-off tributaries can be visited. When the tropical rains do occur, they can be heavy but are often brief. Quick-drying, waterproof, and good rain gear can yield a worthwhile investment.
Andes (Cusco & Sacred Valley): Dry with moderate temps. Lots of direct radiation during the day, then cool nights. The dry season (April-October) guarantees clear weather. The wet season (November-March) and rains that come mainly in the afternoons. Be prepared for sudden weather changes.
