The development of a new luxury concept exists on the slopes of Cotopaxi Volcano which experiences strong winds that shape the páramo landscape. Volcanic peaks create the skyline. The goal extends past providing hospitality because it focuses on creating a sense of belonging while protecting the environment and building a lasting impact.
The current SCAPE Magazine edition features an interview with María José Andrade, who co-established Tierra del Volcán, which stands as Ecuador's leading regenerative tourism project. The family land has undergone a transformation into an active conservation site which also provides community involvement and life-changing experiences since 1999 when she started working with her husband Jorge Pérez.
The project started as ecotourism before sustainability and regeneration became worldwide trends, which now serves as a leading example of responsible tourism in the Ecuadorian Andes.
Tierra del Volcán came into existence because of an immediate requirement which aimed to defend the Andean páramo. The ecosystem which exists mainly in Ecuador and Colombia serves as a crucial environmental system because it absorbs carbon and manages water flow and supports various species. María José inherited the duty of conservation from her family which has protected nature for several generations. The family has maintained ownership of this land through multiple generations while they continue their commitment which reaches back to their ancestors and moves forward to protect their descendants.
Conservation came first. The environmental division of the project received its official establishment during 1992 through the creation of Fundación Páramo. The local community adopted tourism as their main approach to defend their land while generating economic advantages for their area. The border area of Cotopaxi National Park contains 1,000 hectares which have 80% of their land dedicated to conservation activities and habitat restoration projects.
The project operates through Hacienda El Porvenir which functions as a working ranch that combines sustainable cattle farming with active environmental protection efforts.
Here, travelers experience:
It is ideal for those seeking activity, learning, and authenticity without sacrificing comfort.
Located between Cotopaxi and Quilindaña, Hacienda El Tambo revives the ancestral Inca concept of the “tambo”: shelter, warmth, and nourishment for travelers.
There is no visual pollution or digital distraction here. Only fireplaces, silence, endless skies, and a sense of pure exploration. It is the destination for those seeking deep disconnection and minimalist luxury.

The northern highlands area near Otavalo and Ibarra hosts Hacienda El Cerotal which provides visitors with an authentic stay through its seven-room family residence. The building functions as my residence since it provides me with benefits which exceed the standard facilities found in regular hotels. The building gives me the same feeling as my home does.
More than a hotel, it feels like home. Here, travelers:
The location serves as an excellent choice for families who want to stay there or for visitors who prefer to experience local hospitality instead of typical tourist activities.

The historic district of Quito houses Casa Centro which combines opulent living with historical preservation through its possession of one of Ecuador's most valuable private collections of secular artwork. The area functions as a city refuge which allows visitors to walk through historical town squares before they reach their cozy and expertly restored place of rest.

Eighty percent of the team comes from nearby communities, and sourcing policies prioritize “zero-kilometer” suppliers.
Over the past 25 years, the project has:
One of its most emblematic initiatives is the “Forest of Resilience,” a tangible symbol that human impact can be positive.

María José summarizes it clearly:
“People do not conserve what they do not know, and they do not protect what they do not feel.”
Guests do not simply observe the páramo they live it. They drink water sourced from protected springs on the property. They walk trails that explain the difference between grassland and ecosystem. They learn how the water born in Cotopaxi supplies much of Quito.
Education here is experiential, not theoretical.

For Tierra del Volcán, luxury is not ostentation. It is authenticity, space, silence, and connection.

Being part of SCAPE Magazine represents recognition of more than two decades of environmental consistency and commitment.
For the team, being featured validates their long-term vision.
“Tourism should not wear down the territory; it should strengthen it. Our purpose has always been to conserve first and host second.” María José Andrade
Participation in SCAPE amplifies a clear message: true luxury is born from respect for nature and the communities that inhabit it.
The páramo offers absolute peace because it provides unspoiled nature and slow-moving moments which enable us to experience the world beyond human existence.
The name El Porvenir which means "what is yet to come" exists as a developing entity. The upcoming phase will introduce new rooms together with expanded travel options through Cotopaxi and transformational retreats and equine wellness experiences.
The vision remains clear: innovate without losing essence.
People who travel through Tierra del Volcán need to experience the area instead of just staying in one place. Visitors to Tierra del Volcán create different types of relationships with the land which they experience during their visit. People need to understand how tourism functions as a conservation tool which also supports community development and creates opportunities for sustainable growth.
And it is leaving transformed.
The environment undergoes a complete transformation during this process. The natural environment experiences a complete transformation throughout this ecological process.
Cotopaxi National Park exists at a location which resides within the Ecuadorian Andes region of Ecuador while standing 90 minutes away from Quito.
The area offers visitors the chance to enjoy horseback riding while they explore the páramo through guided educational walks and experience authentic local food and participate in cultural events and wellness
Yes. Properties such as Hacienda El Cerotal and Hacienda El Porvenir are ideal for families seeking nature, learning, and comfort.
Active restoration of native forests, local employment, responsible sourcing, environmental education, and protection of the páramo are integral to its model.
