A half-hour walk will take us inside the cave, known for the discovery of fresh skin and bones of a prehistoric species of giant sloth, the mylodon. Remains of other extinct animals have also been found, such as the dwarf horse and the saber-toothed tiger.

At Cerro Castillo, we make a stop at a cafeteria and then continue on to Torres del Paine, crossing numerous estancias and a landscape that ranges from steppe to deciduous forest. On the way, it is possible to spot local fauna such as the South American ostrich or Ñandu and the guanaco, a wild llama. Torres del Paine is known worldwide for the massifs that give it its name, granite giants shaped by the force of glacial ice. After entering the park, we discover a series of colorful lagoons, ice-covered mountains, and abundant local fauna.

We will then stop for a 15-minute walk to the Salto Grande waterfall on the Paine River. After lunch, we will continue to Grey Lake, where we will hike to a panoramic point from where we will be able to contemplate the icebergs and the glaciers of the same name.

Day 9: Puerto Natales

Full-day Navegation to Serrano & Balmaceda Glaciers

The Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers are located within the Bernardo O'Higgins National Park, located 31 miles northwest of the city of Puerto Natales and part of the Andes Mountains. Many visitors come to admire this majestic place, almost untouched by man. Its access is only by sea, sailing through the Ultima Esperanza fjord, which owes its name to the "last hope" of finding the Strait of Magellan in 1557, for an excursion that was looking for it from the Pacific Ocean.

The trip begins in Puerto Natales, and on the way, it is possible to see the old buildings of the Bories meat processing plant, which was one of the largest meat processing industries in Patagonia, you can also observe a colony of Imperial Cormorants, a small colony of sea lions and a variety of plants that make up the flora, such as Coigüe, Canelo, Lenga, Ñire, Chilco and Calafate among others.

The Balmaceda glacier can be seen from the boat, however, to visit the Serrano it is necessary to take a 20-minute walk along a path that borders a small lake originated by the melting of the glacier. On the return trip, there is a stop at Estancia Perales, a place where you can enjoy a tasty and abundant regional lunch.

Night at a hotel in Puerto Natales.

Day 10: Puerto Natales

Breakfast at the hotel.

Full-day excursion to the Perito Moreno Glacier

Early in the morning with the lights of the first day the excursion begins. Most people think that this time of going from Chile to Argentina does not mean crossing the Andes because in Patagonia the longest mountain range is part of the Patagonian archipelago. So, after crossing the border the landscape will be the vast and windswept Patagonian steppe.

On the way it is possible to see from a distance the "Lago Argentino" and the "Rio Santa Cruz" on its way to the Atlantic Ocean.

After arriving in Calafate we will have some free time and then start the visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Once inside the park, it will be possible to take a walk along the stairs and viewpoints to observe this ice giant. Return to Puerto Natales by the same route.
