Essential Leopard Seal Information

The leopard seal is the second-largest Antarctic seal and one of the top predators in the polar region, known for its fierce reputation. With a muscular body stretching up to 3.3 meters (11 feet) and weighing as much as 590 kg (1,300 lbs), they are powerful hunters equipped with oversized jaws and inch-long canine teeth.

Hunting Behavior

Leopard seals are fearless, hunting a wide range of prey including squid, fish, and krill when young. As they grow, their diet expands to include penguins and even other seals, such as fur seal pups around South Georgia Island. They are particularly gruesome hunters, often "playing" with their prey by injuring and releasing it before finally deciding to eat. When they hunt penguins, they wait near the ice edge where penguins jump in and out of the water, swiftly catching them by the feet with their large flippers. They then batter the penguins against the water's surface before tearing them apart.

Cold-Water Specialists

Leopard seals are highly adapted to their cold-water environment, hunting around the Antarctic pack ice and following its movements with the changing seasons. Their specialized teeth allow them to strain krill from the water, ensuring they can survive on small crustaceans when necessary. This versatility helps them thrive as they move across different areas in search of larger prey. The only predator that poses a threat to leopard seals is the orca, or killer whale.

Breeding

Little is known about their full breeding cycle due to the remote locations where they breed. Leopard seals are known to mate in the water, and females haul out onto the pack ice when ready to give birth, creating a shallow depression in the ice for the pup.

Apex Predators

Leopard seals are apex predators, perfectly suited to the harsh and ever-changing Antarctic environment. Their size, agility, and adaptability make them one of the most fearsome hunters in the region.
