New Cuenca–Quito–Baltra Route: Travel to Galapagos | Travel News

Mar-10-2026

The Cuenca-Quito-Baltra air route will officially launch on March 31, 2026, offering significant benefits to travelers heading to the Galapagos Islands from Cuenca, Ecuador. Operated by LATAM Airlines Ecuador, this new service will enhance connectivity for the southern region of the country.

The new route is projected to improve the passenger experience in three key ways:

  • Time Efficiency: Passengers will experience reduced travel times, as the technical stop in Quito will not require disembarking or aircraft changes, allowing for quicker transfers.

  • Convenience and Comfort: Travelers can check their luggage in Cuenca and have it arrive directly in Baltra, simplifying the journey to the islands.

  • Targeted Travel: The route aims to establish Mariscal La Mar Airport as the predominant departure point for southern Ecuador, eliminating lengthy ground transfers to other air facilities.

Infrastructure Enhancements in Cuenca

This new air service represents a strategic effort to bridge the cultural offerings of the Andes with the unique biodiversity of the Galapagos. It is expected to bolster tourism and economic development in Cuenca and surrounding areas.

José Luis Aguilar, Director of the Cuenca Airport Corporation (CORPAC), emphasized that “Cuenca will no longer be simply a stopover destination but a departure gateway to one of the world’s most important natural heritage sites.” This campaign aims to encourage travelers to explore Ecuador with unprecedented logistical ease from Cuenca.

To accommodate the anticipated increase in air traffic and meet environmental and regulatory standards for Galapagos flights, CORPAC is upgrading airport infrastructure. This includes enhanced security measures and a terminal designed for efficient domestic passenger flow.

As preparations for the inaugural flight continue, local authorities are focused on ensuring smooth operations from day one, setting the stage for an improved travel experience for visitors to this remarkable region.
