In early July, marine enthusiast Agustin Baraschi observed a rare white southern right whale off Las Grutas, a coastal town in Rio Negro, northern Patagonia.
The footage captures a young albino whale swimming next to a larger whale, which Baraschi identified as its mother.
Baraschi told Storyful, “This whale calf is just a few days old, and its presence is noteworthy for the area, as it is expected to stay here for several months.”
This isn't the first instance of a rare white whale in the area; another was recorded in 2019.
InterPatagonia reports that whale sightings are common around Las Grutas, which becomes a popular spot for these cetaceans to gather and mate from August to October.
