A sea lion surprised wildlife authorities when it was discovered nearly 30 miles inland within Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park.

According to Ximena Gallardo, regional director of Sernapesca (Chile’s National Fisheries Service), the animal most likely swam upriver in search of food.

“This is the first time a sea lion has made its way into Torres del Paine,” Gallardo stated. “Thankfully, we were able to return him to his natural environment, where he quickly rejoined his group.”

The sea lion was relocated to the coastal city of Puerto Natales, located more than two hours by car from the park.
