Upon arriving in Cusco to board South America's first luxury sleeper train, the Andean Explorer, Katherine LaGrave was ready for some well-deserved indulgence. After 12 days in Peru, including swimming in the Amazon and attending a lengthy wedding, the anticipation of the journey felt like a relief. The waiting hall buzzed with excitement as staff managed last-minute preparations for the overnight trip to Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world.
Before departing, the journey was blessed with a ceremonial dance, setting the stage for the experience ahead. Once on board, passengers were welcomed with champagne and snacks in the lounge, where Katherine relaxed as the train gently chugged out of the station, signaling the start of the adventure. The Andean Explorer, originally from Australia and now refurbished, features four different journeys, offering luxury with well-appointed dining, bar cars, and plush accommodations.
The train journeyed through Peru’s stunning landscapes, with stops like the ancient Inca site of Raqchi, giving passengers the chance to appreciate the region’s rich history beyond the more familiar Machu Picchu. Back on the train, Katherine enjoyed a massage while the train wound its way through the Andes, and later, a gourmet dinner accompanied by conversations with fellow travelers.
As the night wore on, the observation deck became a peaceful refuge under a sky filled with stars, offering moments of reflection before the next day's early stop at Lake Titicaca for a breathtaking sunrise. The experience left a lasting impression, not only for its luxury but for the deep connection to Peru’s culture and natural beauty.
