A New Era of Antarctic Exploration: The Magellan Discoverer Sets Sail for 2026 | Travel News

Oct-30-2025

A major milestone in sustainable expedition travel has emerged from southern Chile with the launch of the Magellan Discoverer, an advanced hybrid-electric expedition vessel built at the ASENAV shipyard in Valdivia. The ship stands as a complete Chilean construction which marks a fresh start for sustainable tourism and technological progress throughout the American continents.

The Magellan Discoverer operates as a boutique expedition vessel which prioritizes environmental preservation through its modern technology and contemporary design elements drawn from Patagonia and Antarctica. The ship stretches 94 meters in size and holds only 76 passengers together with 67 crew members who deliver individualized service to every traveler during their trip.

Built for Sustainability and Comfort

The ship operates through a hybrid-electric system which unites diesel engines with lithium-ion batteries to lower both carbon output and underwater sounds while it achieves better power performance. The ship applies intelligent power management to convert engine heat into interior warmth and elevator energy into battery power. The design elements show dedication to both environmental protection and first-class cruise ship experience delivery.

Antarctic Air-Cruises on the Horizon

The Magellan Discoverer operates as an Antarctic air-cruise vessel which enables passengers to fly over the Drake Passage while experiencing Antarctic exploration activities. Starting in the 2026–2027 season, guests will be able to embark on three remarkable itineraries:

  • The Classic Antarctica Air-Cruise, an eight-day journey through the South Shetland Islands and the Gerlache Strait.
  • The Polar Circle Air-Cruise, a ten-day adventure reaching the Antarctic Polar Circle, offering rare opportunities to explore the continent’s most remote regions.
  • The Inaugural Air-Cruise, a ten-day voyage that begins in Patagonia and sails through the Beagle Channel before venturing across the Drake Passage to the Antarctic Peninsula.

The itineraries feature daily Zodiac tours along with expert presentations and adventure options which include sea kayaking and snowshoeing and ice camping.

Looking Ahead

Now entering its final phase of construction, the Magellan Discoverer will undergo interior outfitting and technical sea trials before delivery in September 2026. Its first official voyages are scheduled to depart in November 2026, ushering in a new era of sustainable exploration for travelers eager to experience the White Continent in comfort and style.
