A recent educational trip to the Galapagos Islands allowed 14 students from Liberty University to explore one of the world's most biodiverse regions. From January 10 to 19, the group investigated native species alongside Drs. Kyle Harris and Sherrie Welfel from the Department of Biology & Chemistry. This excursion incorporated both terrestrial and marine studies, including late-night wildlife surveys and snorkeling activities.
Now in its eighth iteration, the trip focused on new areas of exploration through a collaboration with Tropical Herping, a local biodiversity organization. This partnership provided students with deeper access to remote areas of the Amazon, where they engaged in activities like piranha fishing and observing monkeys. Harris highlights the organization’s experience and commitment to education, emphasizing the academic rather than touristic nature of the trip.
Date: January 10-19, 2026
Participants: 14 Liberty University students
Leading Faculty: Drs. Kyle Harris and Sherrie Welfel
Throughout the ten days, students experienced a variety of species, including amphibians, reptiles, and marine life. A core activity involved nightly surveys to locate and identify nocturnal creatures. They also snorkeled with Whitetip reef sharks, ensuring a diverse interaction with both land and sea wildlife. Harris noted that even with multiple visits, there is always something new to discover, reinforcing the beauty and complexity of the ecosystem.

This trip was organized through LU Send, the university's initiative for student travel and experiential learning. Participants earned credits for courses related to creation studies and tropical biodiversity. Looking forward, Dr. Harris is planning a future expedition to Thailand in January 2027, focusing on elephants and other wildlife.
As this program continues to evolve, it highlights the importance of hands-on learning in environmental science and biodiversity studies, creating lasting educational opportunities for students.
