Discover the Eco-Friendly Magellan Discoverer Cruise Ship | Travel News

Mar-13-2026

A new hybrid-electric expedition cruise ship, the Magellan Discoverer, has been revealed, marking one of the first vessels of its type constructed in the Americas. Operations are set to commence during the 2026-2027 Antarctic season, providing travelers with an advanced blend of sustainable technology and intimate expedition experiences.

The 94-meter vessel, built in Chile, is tailored for an air-cruise format, enabling guests to fly from southern Chile straight to Antarctica, thereby bypassing the often-turbulent Drake Passage.

Accommodating up to 76 passengers with a crew of 67, the Magellan Discoverer offers a high crew-to-guest ratio commonly seen in boutique expedition vessels. The ship’s hybrid-electric propulsion system combines marine battery power with engines that meet International Maritime Organization (IMO) Tier III emission standards. This design aims to minimize carbon emissions and underwater noise, addressing an essential need for environmental preservation in Antarctica's sensitive ecosystems.

Onboard amenities include 40 cabins-featuring Grand Veranda Suites and Single Veranda Cabins, all with private balconies. Public areas encompass an observation lounge, gym, sauna, and dining spaces created by the design studio Tomas Tillberg Design, which incorporates influences from the landscapes of Patagonia and Antarctica.

What changed

The introduction of the Magellan Discoverer signifies a shift in the Antarctic expedition cruise industry towards more environmentally friendly ship models, which also focus on reduced guest capacities. This change aligns with a growing interest in responsible travel practices in polar regions while ensuring that traveler comfort remains a priority.
